What Do They Do and How Do They Work?

In short, they help start your vehicle. They do it by capturing electrical energy -- more specifically, the electricity your battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and ignition coil generate. The process is called spark ignition, and it starts when the key turns in the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch triggers.

The resulting charge then travels to the plugs' leads, combustion occurs, your engine's pistons start to pump, and its crankshaft turns. Most importantly, the many systems throughout your vehicle start running.

Unfortunately, spark plugs aren't permanent. Eventually, their leads can corrode, that is, if they don't otherwise widen too far to conduct electricity effectively. Worse yet, they can weaken and break -- a worst-case scenario that invariably causes severe and expensive damage to your engine's cylinders.
