OEM Toyota Brakes
Brake problems can be hard to diagnose. If you're having trouble with the brakes in your Toyota or Scion, the cause could be anything: this rotor, that caliper, a worn-out pad, and so on. It could be something as simple as a malfunctioning ABS sensor, or even something that has nothing to do with brakes, like shallow tire treads.
Get to know your brake system better, though, and figuring out what's going on gets much easier. Our auto parts store can help. Here's what you need to know.
Toyota & Scion Brakes FAQ
What Types of Brake Systems are There and How Do They Work?
There are drum brakes and disc brakes, and how they work is pretty much the same: when the brake pedal is pressed, a set of brake pistons travel the master brake cylinder's bore; doing so, they pressurize and send brake fluid through a network of brake hoses and lines.
In a drum brake, though, the fluid causes brake shoes and brake drums to fasten and rub together. In a disc brake, it causes brake rotors to press and rub brake calipers and brake pads. The result: friction, the resistance that your vehicle uses to slow down and stop.
How Long Do They Typically Last?
That depends more on the condition of your vehicle's brake parts than its mileage. Either way, if you use your brake long enough, what it'll end up is worn-out.
How Can You Tell if They Need Changing?
There are telltale signs you can look for, including:
- Dashboard warning lights
- Shuddering and/or drifting sideways when you brake
- Longer slowing and stopping times
- Unusual noises as you slow down and stop
- An overly soft or abnormally low brake pedal
- Less brake grip than usual
- Loud grinding noises
A grind indicates that a caliper may be directly contacting a rotor because the former's pad has worn down.
How Do You Know Which Parts Need Replacement?
Inspect your brake pedal, the fluid, the lines and hoses, your brake assemblies, and the parking brake. If it turns out a brake repair is called for, you're in luck: you can order the parts you need for it online, right here.
