OEM Toyota Alternators
Electrical problems throughout a vehicle can be extremely frustrating. Haywire dashboard lighting, followed by a dead battery, then getting stuck waiting for a tow -- that's just maddening. Fortunately, the explanation for what's causing trouble is usually simple, as is the fix: it's your alternator, and it needs replacing.
Looking to learn more about the one in your Toyota or Scion? Our auto parts store can help. You can find all the info you need, right here.
Toyota & Scion Alternators FAQ
What are They?
Primary parts of vehicle charging systems. Yours has one, whether it's a Toyota car like Corolla or Camry, a Scion hatchback like tC or xB, or otherwise. Without it, the vehicle you love driving wouldn't run at all.
What Do They Do?
Turn mechanical energy into electrical energy. More specifically, they convert AC current into DC current using a rectifier, and a voltage regulator manages the charge. This power, your vehicle uses to run its electrical systems.
How Do They Work?
It's a process that starts with your engine and ends with a set of magnetic coils. The engine runs serpentine and drive belts, they run a pulley, it runs a rotor shaft, and that spins the coils. The collective movement creates a magnetic field.
Its energy charges your battery. In turn, your car radio can run, and the displays on your dash can light up. That electricity also powers the windows and steering and moves the windshield wipers. It can even heat your seats if you have the optional feature.
What Causes Them to Fail?
Usually, damaged or worn-out parts, a belt that's too tight, a bad jump-start, or an incompatible accessory install. You usually don't get much warning, either.
What are the Signs They're Going Bad?
They range from lit battery and alternator warning lights to lighting and electronics malfunctions. You can also look for leaking alternator fluid and listen for engine squeaks. Perhaps the most obvious symptoms are a dead battery and a burning smell near it or near the alternator.
When Should You Replace Them?
Your owner's manual's maintenance schedule should have the answer. Usually, it's every 7 years or every 80,000 to 150,000 miles, whichever benchmark you hit first. Otherwise, a thorough inspection and charging system test ought to tell you.
